Bengali Wedding Day Rituals


A Bengali Wedding often referred to as ‘Biye ’is quite a visual treat. A host of deep, meaningful rituals seeped in culture and tradition are performed elegantly. Today we discuss wedding day rituals of Bengali wedding which are also having the same spirit that had been seen in the pre-wedding Rituals of Bengali wedding. After Gaye Holud, the bride proceeds to get ready for the Wedding Day evening.

Typically Groom wears Kurta with dhoti and dots of sandalwood paste on his forehead. He also carries around a brass object with a long handle. The bride is very special in Bengali Matrimonial. Generally, she wears red benarasi saree and lots of jewelry. She also carries a small wooden container filled with the Sindoor and one rupee coin. Wedding day rituals are:     

Bor Jatri and Boron

After receiving the blessing of his mother, the groom sits in the car which is sent by the bride’s family to reach the wedding venue. Family members and friends also accompanied them. When they reach the wedding hall, the bride’s mother welcomes the groom and other members with the large plate contain with rice, turmeric, dry fruits, fruits and a lighted Diya. Then the bride’s mother touches it to the groom’s forehead, shoulders and chest and repeats it three times and then she serves some sweets and some water to groom.

Ashirbaad

The bride’s family elders present some precious gift such as gold, cash, etc. to groom in respect of blessing. This procedure is also repeated when the couple completes the wedding rituals.

Saat Paak and Subho Drishti

A priest performs a small puja with the groom and bride’s family member who will perform the action of Kanya Dayan. After the change his clothes known Jor – A piece of cloth and come back to the wedding venue. Then the bride is seated on the wooden platform and carried by the family members to the wedding venue. During this, the brides hide her face with the betel leaves and bride’s family members take a seven round along the bride’s to groom. This ritual is known as Saat Paak. Then the bride ait opposite to the groom where she removes her betel leaves.

Mala Badal

The couple exchanges their garland with each other.

Kanya Sampradan

The bride and groom seated and the bride’s family, the male member is also placed opposite who will perform the action of Kanya Sampradan. Then the family members unite their hands and bound by sacred thread and priest chants the mantras whereby the bride officially handover the groom for a long life.

Hom

Bride and groom sit beside each other in front of holy fire where the priest utters Vedic mantras which they dutifully repeat after.

Saptapadi & Lajanjali

The priest ties a knot between the one ends of the bride’s saree with the groom scarfs. Then the bride’s brothers put some puffed rice into her hands and pour it into the holy fire.

Sindoor Daan

Then the groom applies sindoor on the parting of the bride’s hair and offers a new saree.

Bidaai

It refers to the departure of the couple. The brides throw some rice over her shoulders.

Bodhu Baran

The groom’s mother welcomed the couple. A mixture of milk and lac dye is placed outside the door and bride’s placed their feet into that mixture and the imprint of her feet is put on the white fabric.
